Proposed UK Reiki Regulator Must Now do the Right Thing

'So, the time is up. We all had until December 31st to send our feedback on proposals for the voluntary self-regulation of Reiki to the wannabe UK Reiki regulatory Body - the Reiki Regulatory Working group (RRWG)', says Taggart King, Reiki Evolution (pictured right). The UK 'road shows' last Autumn, which were designed to present the proposals to UK practitioners, were very poorly attended and one wonders what proportion of UK practitioners actually know about the proposals and how they will affect them. I wonder how many people sent in feedback. It is worth pointing out, I think, that the Reiki National Occupational Standards (NOS) were pushed through some time ago with almost no feedback at all having been received from the Reiki movement, and one wonders how successful the RRWG was this time in getting its message across, since it has not changed its inadequate promotion methods.

'In any case, the time limit for submitting feedback having now run out, the RRWG claim that they are now going to take account of all of our concerns and sort it all out for us, patting us all on the head, thanking us for our time, and then moving on to do what they believe is the right thing to do.

'Of course there will be limits to how much notice the RRWG will take of the feedback sent in to them by practitioners and teachers. If the overwhelming majority of respondents called for there to be no system of voluntary self-regulation for Reiki, would the RRWG say 'OK, we'll pack up our bags and go home now' Of course not. The RRWG has a good idea of where it wants to go and what it wants to do, and public consultation is an unhelpful blip in that process.

'Now, the RRWG has always trumpeted that it is interested in 'consensus' that it is there to produce a system that represents the consensus view of UK Reiki people. Well you cannot achieve consensus by sending out one set of proposals, receiving some feedback, and then organising things on our behalf. If the RRWG is actually interested in consensus then it will do this: it will take account of the feedback received so far, produce revised proposals, and send them out for another round of public consultation.

'I believe that we should all urge the RRWG to 'properly' consult the UK Reiki movement by instituting a second round of consultation on revised proposals later in the year. If you visit the RRWG web site http://www.reikiregulation.org.uk and click on 'contact' you can find the RRWG e-mail address and also the e-mail addresses of all the member organisations of the RRWG. I suggest that if you agree with what I have said, you contact all of these to let them know your views about consensus and proper consultation.

The threat of federalisation
'Looming on a horizon is another problem for our wannabe Reiki regulators: federalisation. There are moves to join together all the various complementary therapies into one register, possibly with a 'common framework' for education, justified by the need to ensure 'public safety' (that endlessly-repeated mantra). This would be disastrous for Reiki since we would, in effect, be handing over the Reiki community's control over its own practice. If such a thing were to be on the cards, then the RRWG should simply walk away from federalisation rather than give up control of our practise to those with very different priorities.'

Reiki Evolution eZine

The new Reiki Evolution eZine introduces a new resource for Reiki practitioners and teachers, leaflets on a CD-ROM. Also, for the first time, course manuals are now available to Reiki teachers in the USA to use on their courses. A new articles is by Master Teacher, Martine Moorby, who has written about Reiki and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique).

Reiki Leaflets for Practitioners and Teachers

When you are starting out as a Reiki practitioner, or looking to develop your practice further, it can be a bit intimidating to think about putting together a leaflet to advertise your treatments. What do you say? How should you lay out the information to make it attractive? How do you start?

We have tried to assist people in this, and take away all the hassle, by making available some Reiki leaflets that you can use to promote your treatments, and to promote your Reiki courses (if you are a Reiki teacher).

We have put together a CD-ROM containing two designs of 'treatments' leaflets, two designs of 'courses' leaflets, and also a leaflet that promotes both treatments and courses. The leaflets are based on the 'A4-folded-into-three' format and are thus suitable for use in the UK, not the USA.

You can print out the leaflets straight away using your computer and desktop printer, or you can take the CD to your local printer if you need a larger number of leaflets.

Click here to read about the leaflets, and to place your order:

Printed Reiki manuals now available to Reiki Teachers in USA and Canada

Many Reiki teachers in the UK are ordering our professionally printed Reiki manuals to use on their own courses. The manuals are available in packs of four at discounted prices.

While a few teachers in the USA and Canada are using the manuals too, the cost of printing in the UK and posting the manuals across the Atlantic equates to a lot of Dollars. But fortunately we have found a solution to this problem.

We have now arranged for our First and Second Degree manuals to be professionally printed actually in the United States, so any Reiki teachers in the USA or Canada who would like to use our discounted Reiki manuals on their own courses can buy them in US Dollars for a lot less than UK prices, and pay only US/Canadian postal rates, not transatlantic Air Mail!

Article: 'Reiki and Emotional Freedom Technique'by Martine Moorby
Reiki Master Teacher Martine Moorby, one of our team of trusted teachers, has extensive experience of teaching and practising both Reiki and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). Since EFT is becoming more popular nowadays, and some people are using it in conjunction with Reiki, I thought it would be interesting to hear about how these energetic practices are similar and how they differ, in terms of treating people, training and self-help. Martine has written an interesting article about this, which you can find here:

Article: 'Reiki Regulation - Protecting the Public?' by Taggart King
I have been putting down some thoughts about the Reiki Regulatory Working Group's proposals for the voluntary self-regulation of Reiki. You can read my article by clicking on the link below. I hope you find what I have written to be interesting and perhaps amusing in places, and I hope that you make your voice heard by giving the RRWG your feedback on their proposals as soon as possible. Here is the article:

The Reiki Regulatory Working Group

The Reiki Regulatory Working Group (RRWG) was set up by representatives of a number of Reiki organisations in collaboration with the Prince of Wales's Foundation for Integrated Health. The RRWG provides a forum for the exchange of views, concerns, standards and best practice with the intention of ‘speaking with one voice’ in working towards Voluntary Self Regulation of Reiki and creation of the single UK Register of Professional Reiki Practitioners.

The group is made up mainly of practitioner representatives, but with up to 5 lay people with specific skills and expertise. Representatives of Reiki organisations with a minimum of 100 members are invited to participate directly - it was felt that smaller organisations could be represented under the umbrella of the larger bodies, but this remains under review to ensure inclusivity.

‘We invite other Reiki organisations or individual Reiki Practitioners and Teachers to make contact with the RRWG on info@reikiregulation.org.uk, if you have any queries.'

AltMedZine talks to Reiki Grand Master, Sensei Tadao Yamaguchi

Interview by Stephen West, Editor of AltMedZine

Reiki Grand Master Sensei Tadao Yamaguchi was present at the camexpo exhibition last week at ExCeL , London on 15th-16th October. Sensei Tadao has been in the UK for just over 2 weeks leading workshops and seminars in Jikiden Reiki in the Sheffield and Denham area.

With direct lineage from Mikao Usui, the founder of Reiki, Sensei Tadao learnt his Reiki skills from his mother, Chiyoko Yamaguchi, who in turn had her skills passed on from Chujiro Hayashi, Mikao Usui's direct student. Now with the passing of his mother in 2003, Sensei Tadao is the Grand Master of this tradition.

Interestingly, Sensei Tadao informs us that he was quite sick as a child and received Reiki treatments from his mother consistently while he was growing up without even knowing! The Reiki he received from his mother helped him to grow into a healthy young man.

Now with over forrty years experience in the Reiki tradition, Sensei Tadao tells us about how his training began at the age of ten, when he started to learn a thing or two about Reiki from his mother as he assisted her in running many seminars and also giving treatments to others. But it wasn't until the age of eighteen when his training became much more detailed.

From here, Sensei Tadao went on learning more about Reiki and expanding his vast knowledge through experience, progressing onto the level of teacher by the age of thirty. Sensei Tadao also has a vast knowledge and training in several other healing arts, including Shinto Healing (a method of healing originating from Japans oldest religion, Shinto).

Sensei Tadao says anyone can learn Reiki but the training of 'Jikiden' or 'Directly Transmitted' Reiki is a much slower process than those schools found in the West and takes many years to become a master. The belief is one must build experience whilst learning in order to really grasp its concepts well.

Specialising in techniques to address the physical, mental and emotional aspects of a person, Sensei Tadao has his training centre in Kyoto, Japan. However, his students have now opened up centres all over the world. His Jikiden Reiki training centres can be found across the U.K. including Buckinghamshire, Brighton, Manchester, and Canterbury.

As Sensei Tadao feels that everybody has the ability to learn Reiki, he would like to pass on his knowledge to as many people as possible. He is also very keen for parents to learn Reiki as he believes it can be of great benefit for children to help them grow, as it was for himself when he was a boy. This was also the belief and wish of his mother.

In 2004 Sensei Tadao published his book, 'The Hayashi Reiki Manual'. Written with his student Frank Arjava Petter, now a top Reiki master in Germany, the books success has lead to it being published in over eight languages.

In this book Sensei Tadao writes about Chujiro Hayashi's life and his mothers experiences as a teacher. The book also contains the healing plan devised by Dr.Chujiro Hayashi. The Hayashi Reiki Manual is sold in most bookshops and is also available from amazon.com.

Sensei Tadao also has another book published in Japan, called 'Jikiden Reiki'. This book has been translated into English and is due for release in the UK in February 2007.

Sensei Tadao finishes by telling us how much he likes the UK and plans on returning next year to lead more seminars and workshops. He would like to visit us here about once a year if time permits.

Come On, Let's Look at the Alternative

by David O'Brien

Ki: it's wonderful stuff. You can hold your breath for a little while and not die, you can go without food and water for a spell without expiring, you can even go without direct sunlight for a period of time before SAD sets in and dark, self-destructive thoughts start flapping around your head like ominous crows, but you cannot, simply cannot live without chi, prana, orgone energy or whatever else you call it- it is the animating energy which courses through Life. Without it, the sap will not rise and nor will you. You cut that supply and you're instantly ...well, if not dead, then transiting into another dimension.

I work with this energy, we all do really, only some of us work with it more consciously than others. Of course after an entire childhood imagining I was an alien and then trying to repress all these feelings of 'differentness', I found myself working in a theatre company (the last refuge of the insane now that Bedlam is no more.) This was my early 20s and I started getting intuitive whispers about how to heal people.

We were giving each other much-needed massages after some strenuous rehearsals when I sensed I needed to move my hands away, stop all the deep rubbing bodywork, and simply just let energy pour from my hands into my colleague. The resultant bang of energy was startling. It was Life-force but not as we know it, Jim. My colleague asked what I was doing. I asked if it was ok, suddenly worried I might be doing something I shouldn't. She said she felt amazing and that the movement of the healing had shifted from the normal body stroking and pummelling to a kind of internal soothing action as though my hands had moved into the boulders and rocks of her tense shoulders and were gently crumbling and clearing away all this blocked, stuck solid ache.

As a company, we started playing with kinesiology and muscle-testing, we also toyed with sending energy around the circle through clasped hands, we experimented with voice-toning and talked about how maybe the pyramids might've been assembled through a kind of vocal-lifting technique (what about the walls of Jericho being blasted sonically etc?) It was an exciting time, full of discovery, imaginative exploration, questioning, open-mindedness, flights of fancy but also deepening discernment.

One day in my stifling, cramped attic room, I was meditating using quartz crystals on my major chakras when I felt as if I'd been plugged into the National Grid. I thought I must be literally glowing like the kids in the Ready Brek ad. I felt an inexplicable urge to walk downstairs in my torn and shabby dressing gown and ask any housemate that might be listening did they want healing, did they have any aches and pains that could do with a zap? And like a group of hypnotised creatures perfectly buying into a different reality, they all came over to have various ailments treated. It was like we were all in an altered state and participating in a higher reality with different rules. There was nothing messianic about the healings: a little earache here, a gippy knee there, nothing too other-worldly. Towards the end of my coming down from the attic like some bargain-basement Biblical figure offering transcendent healing, I suddenly began to panic as the energy felt overwhelming, and fearing my circuits might blow, I looked for a way to earth myself safely. The draining board was chockfull of earthenware crockery and weirdly I thought this might do the trick: I put my hands on the precariously heaped plates, mugs, and dishes and without any fanfare, it did ! The energy dissipated faster than anyone could say, ‘Who do you think you are, Jesus Christ!’

It's difficult to properly diffentiate your development and burgeoning awareness; it all seems to coalesce and become One, which is apt, but chronologically a bit slapdash. Suffice to say, it's all been rather amazing: sometimes brilliant, sometimes dreadful. At times, I've punished myself for non-progress and personal failure: self-defeating at best; self-flagellation at worst. At other times, there's been the excitement of being at the cutting edge and feeling as though the mysteries of the Universe were opening up a chink. When that happens, I pat myself on the back. Smug bugger! There's been a degree of humiliation when at variance with the prevailing wisdom (old-paradigm thinkers lumping us all as loonies); but also there's been times when my life has been lit by the most dazzling epiphanies. Beyond that, the Perennial Wisdom of the Ancients has re-surfaced with such boldness and gusto, that the old allopathic paradigm is being constantly questioned and modified with the infusion of all these effective re-discovered treatments.

What's exciting about being part of this colossal paradigm-shift in consciousness is seeing the opening up of possibilities. Whereas once people felt they could only go to their GP, they are now getting much more proactive in their own healings. This is how it should be. When people start taking such an interest in their own treatments and overall well-being, then miraculous turnarounds can actually take place.

A few years ago my voyage of discovery led me to Reiki via my own brand of experimental energy work - I'd taken a left at Spiritual Healing and took a right just past Creative Visualisation; I even motored through the leafy suburbs of the Chakra System and enjoyed the thrills and beautiful sites of Kundalini Energy. In other words, it's been quite a trip and it's not over yet.
After the teachings of my two separate Reiki Masters I learned to follow my own instincts and conduct treatments with trust in the Divine; this has caused me to combine hands-on Reiki healing with non-contact energy balancing. Since I feel that healing is essentially the re-balancing of the client's own system, I'm delighted by the growing number of people getting involved in their own 'health care.' Our culture is moving into a world of self-nurturing which encapsulates all areas of the medicines including food, lifestyle and balanced emotional states. Yes, we've still a long way to go and education is vital for a general population still foggy on what constitutes proper nutrition.
However, the more people that take control of their lives instead of handing over responsibility to a Government not interested, then the better things will be. No longer will GPs be stretched beyond their limits and find themselves doing consultations over the phone like a kind of Mystic Meg; nor will the NHS be the sole recourse of the worried and ailing.

There is a spiritual axiom which goes As Above, So Below- it works in both directions from microcosm to macrocosm and back again- it's a kind of feedback loop. If people start taking control and care of their health status, I imagine the health service in all its manifestations will become more robust and better functioning. In the meantime, alternative options become wonderful support for a National Health Service which can become once again the envy of the world. Further, with more and more proof of the efficacy of these alternative routes, the Health Service will continue to expand its stock of effective treatments by incorporating more of these complementary options, ensuring a more holistic approach and averting the worsening of eminently treatable conditions. Another feedback loop! Hey, things are looking up.
