Reiki Jin Kei Do - The Way of Compassion and Wisdom

Author Steve Gooch has beautifully written what is the first book on the Jin Kei Do system of Reiki (RJKD). Based on Mikao Usui's (the founder of Reiki) early approach, the Jin Kei Do system is heavily influenced by early Buddhist teachings. These teachings, focused around compassion and wisdom, in the Jin Kei Do tradition are now known as Buddo-EnerSense. (Review by Stephen West)

This exciting new book commences with a very good description of Reiki along with the universal energy field and perhaps the most important part of ones journey with Reiki, the path to know oneself.

Detailing the history of the Reiki tradition, from the Tendai Buddhist founder, Mikao Usui to the present day lineage head of the RJKD system, Dr. Ranga Premaratna, this book gives a good description of how Reiki has evolved and has been passed on to more recent masters. Steve also elaborates on lineage and its importance within Reiki.

The philosophy of RJKD, being based on the Buddhist perspective of compassion and wisdom is both simple and beautiful. To know and to have compassion in your heart is not enough, one must act upon it in order to help another's suffering, thus to have compassion is to be engaged in an active and dynamic process.

The three degrees of Reiki and their acquisition is discussed in depth, emphasising that the approach is very much based on the individual and that completing the third level of 'master' does not necessarily mean mastery. The attunement process has also been well explained along with its effects on the whole being including the chakras.

What seems to be quite unique about the Jin Kei Do system of Reiki is the Buddho-EnerSense meditations that amplify the natural healing mechanisms of the body. The system also teaches its students Chi Nadi exercises to improve the physical health of the body and to aid in the practice of mindfulness. In this book, the author has given a good overview of the disciplines of energy cultivation, meditation and mantras.

This very interesting and informative new book is a must have for anyone not only interested or involved in Reiki but also those who work with or have an interest in energy, meditation and Buddhist philosophy.

'The Light Revolution, Health, Architecture and the Sun'
by Richard Hobday PhD

This book is just what we need to start putting right our nation's health - safely and free of charge, meanwhile providing a few home truths for the UK's outdated and misguided health service. Here we have a highly readable, well-researched account of the value of sunlight to human beings throughout the ages right up to the very latest research evidence that may have missed the headlines. In the nicest possible way, 'The Light Revolution' serves as a warning to us all - keep out of the sun at your peril (Review by Grace Filby).

In this new book Richard Hobday, also author of 'The Healing Sun', admirably introduces us to his expert knowledge of how ancient Egyptians and Roman city planners made full use of their understanding of sunlight to promote good public health and specifically to prevent ill-health. He takes us step by step, in layman's language but with thoroughness and a gentle sense of humour, through the more recent historical evidence from the nineteenth century. At that time amidst the new industrial squalor and polluted Victorian cities, scientists, writers, nurses, doctors, philanthropists, architects and all were announcing to the world that sunlight is vital as a disinfectant, restoring very sick patients to good health as well as strengthening the immune system and significantly controlling our physical and emotional wellbeing. It was common knowledge that sunlight is the best disinfectant. In those days the great public health challenges for which sunlight provided a ready answer were infected wounds, pain management and melancholia. Rickets and TB were soon to be identified as preventable and treatable with solar therapy. In 1903, a Nobel Prize for Physiology was awarded to Niels Finsen in recognition for his success in treating TB with ultraviolet light. How is it that nowadays sunlight doesn't even get a mention in the official TB information for the British public?

The real punch to this book is what has gone badly wrong in the last hundred years or so. Whilst building technology and modern medicine have advanced immeasurably, the necessary skills and art of harnessing the sun's power for health have been overlooked.
Much of the painstaking research and pioneering achievements have been ‘airbrushed out’ of the medical books and courses in architecture - all but forgotten. The human basic biological need for sunlight is not only being ignored and neglected. We can ask ourselves - is it even being denied - cavalier-style - by the government agencies and medical experts whose job it is to protect the nation's health?

Hobday reminds us of those well-intentioned public health campaigns advocating sun avoidance. They could actually be having a harmful effect because sunscreens cut out our ability to make Vitamin D by 90%. Meanwhile, we have known for half a century that exposure to UV light reduces cholesterol levels by 13%, and also lowers blood pressure!
Has this artificially created fear of sunlight actually caused thousands of people to die prematurely - many, many more than have died from skin cancer?

Conversely, the author advises us that there is now enough evidence of a link between vitamin D deficiency and the modern ills of cancer, coronary heart disease, diabetes, obesity, depression and numerous others. He calls for health campaigns to actively promote sunbathing, and inform the public of the best ways of doing this safely.

Here is the historical evidence for sunlight therapy in terms of curing rickets and TB during the pre-antibiotic era, along with plenty more evidence about sunlight's other general antimicrobial properties. It was reported to the Royal Society back in 1877 that sunlight kills bacteria. More recently, scientists have concluded that infection with the influenza virus depends on variations in natural sunlight - how could that knowledge be applied to 21st century flu infections such as SARS and bird flu perhaps? It is emphasised, loud and clear, that a consequence of 20th century antibiotics has been a complacent, over-relaxed attitude to infections. The dangers nowadays are that multi-resistant superbugs cling on to the indoor airborne dust that is basically microscopic skin cells but not noticed because of the lack of strong beams of sunlight in our modern buildings! Thankfully, we are given a simple example of some research dating back to 1944 when the dust in dark hospital corners consistently contained bacteria - whereas dust on or near the windows was consistently germ-free. Yes, in sunlight, the bacteria are destroyed and the principle is simple enough for a child to understand.

Now at last we are provided with a wake-up call to fresh air, sunlight and cleanliness, because the same bactericidal principle would apply whether the germs have developed antibiotic-resistance or not. Whether the 'contact' theory of germ transmission, or the 'droplet' theory or the 'dust' theory is now accepted, (or even all three), the fact remains that multi-drug resistant infections are here to stay and we could learn a lot from our forebears who had other methods of keeping people healthy.

Hobday suggests that perhaps a business case could be put forward - where healthy lighting has a value placed on it in terms of hospital running costs, including staff illness and patient outcomes. He also offers some research topics for the future, such as what is the healthier option - sunbeds or vitamin D supplements. After reading this book, the public would want to know, one way or the other. He points out the dangers of shift work and 24 hour lighting in hospitals, linked with medication errors by staff and poor quality of sleep for patients, so there are major opportunities for developing lighting technologies that promote safety and health. We are provided with practical suggestions for doing a light audit, and by applying the basic principles of building orientation, how we can work out for ourselves from maps of our homes, workplaces and hospitals whether we are likely to be receiving enough sunlight.

In terms of town planning and architectural design, we are treated to some superb explanatory diagrams of how buildings should be oriented for maximum benefit inside and outside buildings - and as an interesting contrast to the rest of the book, there are some descriptions and drawings showing the creativity and idealism of 20th century architects who themselves were great sun-worshippers of the day, as examples of Modernism and the new International Style. The author includes some choice quotations that are still worth contemplating today:

for example, the great Le Corbusier from 1953:
‘Doling out cosmic energy, the sun's effects are both physical and moral, and they have been too much neglected in recent times. The results of that need can be seen in cemetery and sanatorium.’

How ungrateful we are, by staying in the shadows and depriving ourselves of sunlight. We may not in this country have a legal right to sunlight, but this book, the sequel to 'The Healing Sun' by the same author, is about revolution.

No doubt there will soon be more to tell, when this sorry situation is looked at in a different light. Now we can, if we choose, take some responsibility for our own health and act on the information we have been given in this salutary book. Also we can calmly request that our public buildings are free of harmful pathogens for our health and safety. The onus is on the hospital trusts and employers. Are you still sitting comfortably? Now let's begin the new year afresh, and let some sunlight in. It sounds simple enough, doesn't it?

An excellent book for the new year.

Personal Magnetism for Personal Power - A New Book Based on Old Wisdom

Brenda El-Leithy has taken classic teachings on the Law of Attraction, brought them back from obscurity, and added a modern interpretation in her revival of 'The Magnet', based on the writings of Lida A. Churchill.

At the beginning of 2006, Brenda El-Leithy, a practising Clinical Hypnotherapist, was sorting through old books to be disposed of and came across a very old and tattered copy of 'The Magnet' published in 1903 that had sat on her shelves for years without attention. It fell open at a page that gave a very direct, personal message and complemented the principles behind the growing interest in the Power of Intention and Cosmic Ordering. The timeless teachings in this book give you an insight into how powerfully and positively you can influence your reality. Over 100 years later, this book was ready to be brought back to life.

From her own experience, Brenda El-Leithy tells us, 'When you work with the wisdom in this book, then you too can become the Designer of your life, creating the reality you want'.

Stephen Richards, author of 'Cosmic Ordering Guide' says of this book, 'Just as Cosmic Ordering has been applauded as a newfound way to manifest your desires, the content herein is no less wondrous and magical'.

The Better Brain Book
By David Permutter

Brain degeneration can result in common memory problems (mislaying keys, forgetting names, etc.) or more serious conditions such as Alzheimer's, stroke, Multiple Sclerosis or Parkinson's. In this comprehensive guide to prevention and treatment of 'brain ageing' Dr Permutter outlines dietary and lifestyle changes based around three core programmes: prevention, repair, and recovery. Which programme you undertake depends upon risk factors and current brain health.

The Better Brain Book presents the foods and supplements that can improve or harm brain health. These include Acetyl-L-carnitine, alpha lipoic acid, vitamin B complex, vitamin C, Coenzyme Q-10, Vitamin D, DHA, Vitamin E, Folic Acid, Gingko Biloba, N-acetyl-cysteine, Phosphatidylserine and Vinpocetine. Consult the book for a detailed guide as to how to calculate individual requirements.

‘I am often asked what I think is the single most important thing you can do to keep your brain functioning at its peak and prevent brain aging. The answer is easy. If you want to perform at the highest levels and maintain a lifetime of optimal brain health, you must be vigilant about what you put on your plate. It's as simple as that. Nutrition is the most important tool for staying mentally and physically fit, and it is by far the most underutilised tool...

...The most important nutrient for your brain is fat. The brain, the most metabolically active organ in the body, is constantly replenishing and repairing itself. Most of the food we eat not only ends up being used by the brain but ends up in the brain itself. The brain needs fat more than any other nutrient, because the brain is made up of fat. The problem is that if we feed it unhealthy fats, we wind up with an unhealthy brain.’

Dr Perlmutter is an experienced neurologist who believes that common medications are useful if used wisely, but long-term (or even medium-term use) can have a detrimental effect on brain health. The book includes a comprehensive guide to drugs that may harm brain function.

‘...numerous commonly used over-the-counter and prescription drugs can decrease brain function and make you more susceptible to neurological problems. Even the best of drugs can have nasty side effects, including robbing the body of vital nutrients that protect against disease. Many drugs deplete the brain of key antioxidants such as Co-Q10 and glutathione. Other drugs sap the body of B vitamins, which help control homocysteine, an amino acid (building block of protein) that, if allowed to rise to unhealthy levels, can promote inflammation and blockage of blood vessels. High levels of homocysteine are a risk factor for depression, memory problems, and a slowdown in cognitive function. Other commonly used drugs- including many over-the-counter antacids- contain aluminium, a heavy metal that also promotes inflammation and may increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease. ..

...I'm not saying not to use pharmaceutical drugs ever; there are times when taking the right medication can be lifesaving, and I prescribe medications where appropriate. I am cautioning, however, against the casual use of drugs, particularly when there may be better options, such as making positive lifestyle changes like improving your diet, getting enough rest, and embarking on an exercise programme.’

The book also includes chapters on dangerous toxins (lead, mercury, aluminium, pestcides, etc) and household dangers (cell phones, radio waves, etc), medical tests for brain function, and brain exercises to sharpen memory. The last part of the book consists of 6 chapters, each covering a specific neurological condition and describing what to do about them. There are action plans for: Stroke, Vascular Dementia, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Multiple Sclerosis and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

The Earths's Gift To Medicine

By K-G Wenzel M.D. & R. J. Pataracchia N.D.

'This book is as essential as the minerals it talks about. The word ‘trace’ hides the enormous importance of these minerals that work in concert and are essential for maintaining health. A common misperception is that calcium is the most important mineral and the one everybody should be taking. This could not be further from the truth. Indeed, I would suggest, that this book should be understood as a most useful survey of all that is essential 'beyond calcium'.

We need all the minerals in suffificient quantities to replace what we no longer get in our food, which is grown on factory farms that do not use mineral fertilisers. Most plants may look fifi ne, but they no longer provide all that we need for good health. Medical and nutritional research now shows that the current epidemic of chronic diseases is in large part due to chronic mineral deficiencies throughout the population. The list of diseases is as long as the list of minerals that are necessary for human functions: diabetes because of lack of chromium; cancer and AIDS for want of selenium; thyroid disease due to lack of iodine; immune deficiency because there is not enough zinc in the soil, and much more.

This small volume will go a long way to draw people's attention to the fact that the body is not just made of calcium, but requires dozens of minerals and other nutrients that must be taken in dietary supplement form, because our food supply is inadequate. I highly recommend Dr. Klaus Wenzel's The Earth's Gift To Medicine.’ - Abram Hoffer

Revealing the Tao Te Ching - (In-depth Commentaries on an Ancient Classic)

Translation and Commentary by Hu Xuezhi
Edited by Jesse Lee Parker

There are many English translations of the Tao Te Ching. In fact, it is one of the most frequently translated works other than the Bible. This classic dates to 500 B.C. and was attributed to Lao Tzi. While the original work is relatively short, it presents a conflict of logic to the western mind, which can be very thought provoking. After all, ‘The Tao that can be spoken of is not the eternal Tao.’

Revealing the Tao Te Ching provides a bridge to understanding the ancient text by putting it into an historical and cultural context. The two hundred page volume, published by Ageless Classics Press, contains more than the usual translation; it is also a discussion of Taoism as understood by Master Hu, a senior Taoist teacher, who lives in Anshan in northeast China.

The book begins with didactic discussion of basic Taoist beliefs in a prologue on ‘Retracing the footprints back to the very beginning...’ This includes a very detailed description of Taoist concepts of life and death, the one and the many, and the retracing of our footsteps backwards to regain the state of Infinite Emptiness, etc. I found the prologue to be quite intense, with enough material to form the basis of one or more separate books. Many technical terms are introduced here and are repeated at the end of the book in a glossary which I found very helpful.

The next section deals with Master Hu's translation of the actual text, together with a line-by-line commentary. His commentaries are instructive and help put the text in its cultural and historical perspective. One example of this can be found in chapter thirty-one on the subject of war. The author quotes the original text, ‘The followers of Tao prefer the position of the left; the people of war prefer the position of the right.’ In his commentary, he goes on to discuss that ‘the left position is symbolic of an east orientation, which is of a wood nature...the right position is of a west orientation, which is of a metal nature.’ Who would think that one could find such a reflection of our modern day terms in such an ancient text?

Master Hu's translation has some interesting nuisances that I have not seen in other translations. There are some 53 illustrations throughout the book and a short bibliography at the end, but no index. I am new to the study of the Tao and this appears to be a good basic place to start. I judge it to be of interest to those who want to learn more about the origins of Taoism and the present day understanding of it.

Adventures in Psychiatry - The Scientific Memoirs of Dr Abram Hoffer

For those of us who have learned, through painful personal experience that drugs, surgery, and most of high-tech medicine offer only very temporary benefits, but rarely if ever a cure, this book tells the wonderful story of the rebirth of nutritional medicine. Based on the science of biochemistry, now known as orthomolecular medicine.

Here we follow the journey of its founder: from his Saskatchewan farm childhood, subsequent training in bio-chemistry and agricultural science, his early insights into the central importance to human and animal health of soil and plant food quality, to his specialisation in psychiatry, professorship at the University of Saskatchewan, and his daily work with patients.

We learn of his disillusionment with traditional methods of treating the mentally ill and we share his excitement of discovery as we follow his dramatic case histories, which unfold like detective-stories, as he uncovers the connection between deficiencies in specific vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids and mental illness.

Once teamed up with the great Linus Pauling, we re-live their research odysseys that led to modern orthomolecular medicine, transforming psychiatry, the treatment of cancer and chronic disease, and offering patients recovery, not merely death-watch maintenance therapies.

In addition to Dr. Hoffer's many fruitful years working with Pauling, we also meet many colleagues who helped design the rigorous research programmes for orthomolecular medicine.

Natural Healing for Schizophrenia and Other Common Mental Disorders By Eva Edelman

A sizeable number of schizophrenics and their families are dissatisfied with conventional methods and actively seek information on alternative treatments. Natural Healing for Schizophrenia should also be of prime interest to physicians and other health professionals searching for more effective treatments, including many nutritionally-oriented physicians. Individuals interested in brain biochemistry and the influence of nutrients, toxins, and illness on brain functioning will also find this book valuable.

Review:
'Eva Edelman has put together an excellent sourcebook with a wholistic view of the many causal factors which come together to create schizophrenia. This is not a dry DSM-like catalogue of schizophrenia's symptoms. Edelman's approach is to show how each individual stands at a unique junction of environmental, nutritional and biochemical continuums. By this view, the success of nutritional healing of schizophrenia depends on the acumen of the health practitioner in identifying and correcting as many causal factors as possible. In defining the schizophrenias, Edelman combines clinical descriptions with first hand accounts. The sidebars of the book contain many short testimonials which are emotionally charged and often poetic and describe the subjective experience of schizophrenia from those who have lived with it.

Edelman also compares the major biochemical patterns (called biotypes) prevalent in schizophrenia with a comprehensive discussion of frequency, biochemical markers, diagnostic tests, and the physical and psychological symptoms associated with them. Along with this is information on virtually every nutritional praxis for these syndromes.

From the work of Carl Pfeiffer and others, Edelman identifies three major patterns in schizophrenia. Histadelia is characterised by high levels of histamine and low levels of serum copper; histapenia is the opposite with low levels of histamine and elevated copper; and a third syndrome, pyroluria, which is diagnosed by an elevated level of urinary kryptopyrrole and is very responsive to vitamin B6.

The contribution of other biochemical profiles implicated in mental illness is also explored: Vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiencies, fatty acid abnormalities, cerebral allergies to gluten and casein, and abnormalities in sugar metabolism can all have deleterious effects on brain function of themselves, and in combination with existing mental illnesses.

Edelman has thoroughly researched environmental medicine and summarizes what it has to teach us in her discussion of neurotoxins and schizophrenia. The neurological effects of the three great socially accepted toxins - alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine - are also brought to light, information often overlooked with the more common perceptions about their physical side effects.

In the section entitled Somatopsycho, Edelman explores the body-mind connection in schizophrenia. Somatopsycho is a term used to describe the influence of physical health on the mind and vice-versa. There are many physical illnesses such as thyroid disorders and porphyria which can also have negative mental symptoms.

Conversely, schizophrenia can cause immunological dysfunctions and expose the body to more chronic and serious diseases. The idea presented here is that there are so many pathways between body and mind, the practitioner must be able to consider a host of indirect causal factors in diagnosing any mental illness.

Edelman writes at length of the consequences of extended ‘toximolecular’ treatment regimes on the long term well-being of persons with schizophrenia.
The success of conventional treatments are compared with that of nutritional therapies, and we see how vitamins, amino acids and herbs can serve as primary treatments themselves, or at the very least vanquish the dyskinesias and negative symptoms of neuroleptic drugs.

Timeless Secrets of Health & Rejuvenation

By Andreas Moritz
Review by Stephen West

In his latest book, Ayurvedic Medicine practitioner and health consultant Andreas Moritz brings to our attention all of the major issues concerning health, offering information and effective methods of cleansing for many of the primal organs and systems of the body, including the blood and blood vessels and the lymphatic system.

With his comprehensive approach, Moritz talks about the unity of body, mind and spirit, that disease or dis-ease is not only physicality and that the disease may permeate also to our mental and spiritual/energetic faculties, but more commonly, that disease may have its origins in the mental or spiritual realm of our being, manifesting in the physical.

As Moritz states; 'Aging and illness have its origins in the effects of fearful, negative mental attitudes and emotions and excessive accumulation of toxic waste material in our body'. With this emphasis on unity, Moritz outlines that shutting down or suppressing a symptom of disease has nothing to do with healing it.

What I really like about the way Andreas Moritz writes is that he presents his information in such a simple, straightforward way that can be understood by all. In my opinion, this is a clear sign that Moritz has a very deep understanding of the subject of health and the holistic approach.

Within this fascinating book, Moritz delves into the mystery of mind and body, outlining the laws of health and illness, the risk factors of common diseases, and the diagnostic parameters. Not only this but the four most common causes of disease and how to remove them is also discussed along with the basic misconceptions people and doctors have about health, bringing up interesting topics like, 'Is today's medical practice trustworthy?' and 'Are we poisoning our children with food?'

Andreas Moritz's approach to healing is to encourage people to take responsibility for their own health and well being, much is the aim of his new book, Timeless Secrets of Health & Rejuvenation, which includes a complete self-help programme, part of which comes from Ayurveda.

This book is an amazing resource for any health practitioner, not only for understanding health and well being on a much deeper level but also as a useful tool, incorporating the techniques and advice outlined for ones patients and for ones self.

Timeless Secrets of Health and Rejuvenation is available from The Nutri Centre at £22.00.

The Nutri Centre has a discount scheme for practitioners and students of alternative medicine of 10-25% across the whole extensive range of their health and alternative medical books.

CD Helps Holistic Practitioners 'Earn Their Worth'

Amanda Goldstone has created a comprehensive CD and workbook to help practitioners achieve their goals and overcome any limiting beliefs.

She says: 'Holistic Practitioners, by their very nature, tend to be loving, caring, giving people with a genuine desire to help and heal fellow human beings and the planet as a whole.

'Out of this desire to help, many practitioners tend to give away a lot of their services for free or charge very low prices. In doing so, they undermine themselves and their service, and end up running round like very drained headless chickens.

'Happiness is a direct result of fulfilling our potential and that only happens when we do what needs to be done, not just what feels good.

'Fear of rejection stops us taking steps towards our goals, even though the changes we want to make will bring more happiness by considerably enhancing our lives.

'Johann Sebastian Bach was orphaned by age 9. Albert Einstein's parents were concerned because he didn't talk until the age of three. Martin Luther King, Jr was a middle child.

What made every one of these people great was not their environment or their DNA. If you look closely at any person, great or small, successful or poor, happy or sad, you will find only one common denominator --- they are all self-made
What makes you who you are is YOU! It's not your circumstances or your pedigree.

The question will never be, 'What am I supposed to do?' Instead, it will be 'Who do I want to create?' The question is, 'Do you like what you have created or did you have something else in mind?'

The Jing Luo: The Definitive Guide to Point Location

The College of Traditional Acupuncture: Edited by Dean Lander Ac. M.; M.B.Ac.C.
Review by Stephen West

From using The Jing Luo; the Definitive Guide to Point Location one can see straight away the amount of work gone into compiling this hardcover bound reference manual. I was very impressed with not only the linear and practical fashion the book is set out with its step-by-step strategy but also the extra detail added.

The book starts out with each of the main and extra meridian pathways broken down with alternative terminology outlined, making the book easily understandable and of equal benefit to practitioners of all models, not just five-element acupuncture. This is followed by a list of all the specific points found throughout the body. Not only that, but the beginning pages also list the specific points into functional categories, i.e. yuan, luo, horary, etc. This I find very useful from a practitioners perspective and especially for students of acupuncture for quick and easy viewing.
Its features like this that make this book a very "look-up" friendly reference book.

From here, the book progresses into individual chapters for each of the main meridians, starting with the Lung channel and following in the sequence of the Chinese clock. Each chapter/meridian is also nicely colour coded according to its elemental relationship.

Each chapter begins with a description of the energetic channels of the main meridian, divergent channel, connecting channel and the muscle/tendino-muscular channel along with their internal pathways, anatomical origins, passing structures and acu points traversed. I find the simple and direct explanation of each pathway very beneficial for easy and quick review and for the student it provides a very straight-forward explanation.

However, the books forte is location. Great lengths have been made to ensure the reader is left in no doubt where each point is with the inclusion of a tips section with several added suggestions for each point. An extra section is also included in the Bladder meridian chapter when dealing with the Back Shu points. This extra section gives extensive tips on how to mark out the vertebra correctly and efficiently. The book also states the position the patient should be in when locating each point. These three elements alone make the book a must for any acupuncture student.

The main functions of each point are also listed as well as the needle depth, Chinese name (with English translation), relevant cautions, the number of suggested moxa's for each point and a complete reference guide at the end of each chapter.

With clear, full colour photographs for each point, the meridian line is also shown, emphasizing the direction of the flow or qi. The surrounding points from other meridians are also included in the pictures to give further references when locating. The pictures are taken from a practitioner's point of view, from what would be seen in a clinical situation.

Towards the end of the manual the extraordinary meridians are covered, with a description of each pathway and a list of the coalescent points. Each point is then described in more detail as regards to its functioning and the location.

The manual concludes with the extra points, not pertaining to any meridian. In this section, the points are briefly described with the location, position of patient and needle depth and technique.

The Survivor's Guide to Bird Flu: The Complementary Medical Approach

by CMA President, Jayney Goddard FCMA, Lic.LCCH, Dip.ACH

Avian Flu (Influenza Type H5N1) more commonly known as 'Bird Flu' has a lethality of over 50%. The World Health Organisation is telling us that a viral pandemic is inevitable and it is 'not a matter of if but when'.

The CMA has produced a book - 'The Survivors Guide to Bird Flu: The Complementary Medical Approach' which is now ready to buy from the new shop. Or, if you prefer to send a cheque, please email administrator Roberta MacMillan at Admin@The-CMA.Org.UK for details.

'This book is calm, precise, informative and to the point - it is not sensationalist and inaccurate, as are so many publications that have jumped onto the Bird Flu 'bandwagon'.

On the contrary, we offer many realistic options for real people. The approaches that we recommend are grounded in science and have a long history of traditional usage and success. In fact, this book bridges the gap between complementary and conventional medicine and contains over 500 scientific references.

Modulate your Immune System
Based upon solid science and decades of dedicated research at the very highest scientific levels we have worked out precisely what you can - and should do - to modulate your own immune system in order to be optimally resistant to viral infection and we look closely at H5N1 in particular and suggest ways in which you might choose to protect yourself based upon our findings. We explain why this is so important and why you should take immediate steps to prepare yourself and your loved ones to be optimally resistant to viral infection - now.

Treating Bird Flu Casualties
We also discuss treatments that have been used in previous epidemics and pandemics - the success of these and the best treatment options - based upon scientific and historical data. Basing our recommendations upon a complementary and integrated medical approach, we provide realistic treatment options for real people!

In response to feedback that The CMA received after the first draft of the book, The CMA has set up a Buyer's Group which negotiates with the world's best manufacturers of the particular types of supplements, herbs and other treatments that we recommend in order to be able to supply these to people who want to ensure that they are taking the correct products, in the correct doses. Due to the sheer power of our purchasing ability, we have been able to negotiate special rates with the suppliers so that most people can actually get access to these important - potentially life saving - products. These products will be available from our shop in due course.

What to Avoid when Preventing Bird Flu
Also, very importantly in 'The Survivor's Guide to Bird Flu: The Complementary Medical Approach', we tell you what you should avoid - approaches and products that could prove to be potentially very dangerous or even lethal. For example, one of the current problems that The Complementary Medical Association sees is the blanket recommendation of 'immune boosting' approaches e.g. particular herbs such as Echinacea and Black Elder for example. As treatments, these could prove disastrous as one of the grave problems for those who have contracted avian flu is the 'cytokine storm', which occurs as a result of your body's own response to a virulent (powerful) virus such as H5N1. Cytokines, normally, help to keep us healthy but in the case of massive and overwhelming infection with a virus as lethal as H5N1, your body 'over-responds' and this response is what kills people. Using decades of research papers and well-proven immunological scientific knowledge, we have actually worked out how to manipulate certain important aspects of the immune system in order to modify your immune response.

Conventional Approaches like Tamiflu and Vaccines when treating Avian Flu
We cover these options in an even handed manner and provide you with advice that is based in scientific fact and research. You can then feel reassured that you have the knowledge to make an informed decision about whether to use Tamiflu - should you be able to obtain it or a vaccine - if one is produced.

All of this sounds like space age technology - well, in a way it is, as we have taken the very best that conventional science has to offer and combined it with the most excellent and well researched complementary medical approaches available and come up with an entirely new approach to the practice of medicine. A new approach that is effective, replicable and demonstrably efficient.'
