Are
you Big Enough to Own Up?
By Janice Moore
Self-deception
could be the real reason for the stress in your life, but owning up to
this can be a hard pill to swallow.
With an ever growing body of evidence supporting the body-mind connection,
it's difficult to ignore the subject of how our thinking and actions might
be impacting our health. A major commonality amongst people that come
to us for relaxation training is that they tell themselves one thing about
what's important to them in life and what they want from it, and then
fail to demonstrate those values and beliefs through their behaviour and
actions. This leads to an inner conflict that, we believe, is a major
cause of stress and consequently ill-health.
The word 'health' is in fact based on an Anglo-Saxon word hale'
meaning whole'. To be healthy is to be whole - body-mind as one.
So is it any wonder that when we inflict separation between our body and
mind through our thinking and actions, ill-health prevails?
The great tragedy comes when a person lives in denial of this fact, or
is simply so lost in the deception that they're living, that they're blissfully
unaware - until crisis comes knocking and alternative action is forced
upon them!
So why do so many people live in this state of self-deception? Most likely
because it's easy, comfortable and familiar. Also because we live in a
society that propagates self-deception. How often do you pull people up
for something they're doing that you know is in conflict with the image
of themselves they hold in their head? How often do people point out to
you your own delusions? It just doesn't happen (often enough). Politeness
rules, and it hangs like a thick fog around us.
Action! Leave delusion at the door. Get real about what you say you want,
and what effort you're prepared to put in to achieving it. Take responsibility
for making sure that your behaviours are in line with your values and
beliefs. Ask yourself this question 'are my actions and behaviours moving
me toward the vision that I have of how I'd like my life to be?'
