The Real Secrets to a Very Merry Christmas

Charles Moore of Relaxation Training specialists The 4th R reveals the secrets that rest at the heart of a stress free Christmas.

1. Choose what you want to be doing, and then do it whole heartedly
Ever done something knowing that your heart’s not been in it and your mind’s been off else where? If so, then you’ll know that it didn’t feel right, and whether you realised it or not, your health paid a handsome price for this lack of integrity. Harmony is important for health, so consciously choose what you want to be doing, and then do it whole heartedly. Even if it does mean telling someone that you won’t be visiting them this Christmas!

2. Use the path of least resistance
A master of Judo knows the secret, as does the wise Mum that has a 2 year old throwing a tantrum in the supermarket, and the executive who knows how to get his boss to say yes! The secret is to use the path of least resistance. Quit battling head on because this drains massive amounts of energy from you and fatigues your body and mind. Instead think in terms of surrendering and re-directing the energy of the situation – take the path of least resistance!

3. Don't do things that will compromise your emotional or physical health
Both your emotional and physical state have a huge effect on your health, so it’s important to ask yourself questions such as 'Is doing this in line with how I want my life to be?' and 'Can I remain at my best if I do this?' before you make decisions. If the answer is 'yes' to these questions, then proceed, if the answer is 'no', then don't. If the answer is 'not sure' - still don't, and gather more information.

4. Take the time to find out how you are when you are at your best
When you’re at your best and having one of those days where it seems you can’t put a foot down wrong, what do you notice about yourself? What do you notice about how you’re holding and moving your body? Scan your body from top to toe, noticing how each of your muscles feel and how your skeletal structure is poised. Taking the time to do this will mean that you can organise yourself to be at your best intentionally, instead of it being left to chance of having a good day!

5. Be considerate of others and your environment
Replace your 'Me, Me, Me!' mentality, with consideration of others and your environment. When you do this, you’ll find your self maneuvering smoothly around the events of Christmas, instead of knocking your way through them and having to make sharp adjustments to keep yourself upright. Contrary to what you might think, this is a lot less demanding of your body, and your health will reflect it.

6. Identify harmful habituated patterns of posture of movement
Don’t wait for extreme pain before waking up to what’s going on from your neck down. Common ailments such as migraine, back ache and even various digestive and respiratory problems can be eased and often avoided all together when you identify and stop harmful habitual patterns of posture and movement that create and keep tension in your body.
