Autogenic Therapy Self Help for Wellbeing

Significantly reduce stress and increase well-being - your own and your clients'. Learn Autogenic Training, a research based technique, that promotes self empowerment and peace of mind.

AT Diploma in 1 year

Autogenic Therapy (sometimes known as Autogenic Training or AT) is a highly effective method of deep relaxation which strengthens resilience and self-esteem.

It is a truly self-empowering tool that helps raise confidence.

'AT has changed my life and it is a part of my day to day routine. I also feel very empowered as I feel AT belongs to me i.e. I don't need to rely on relaxation CDs, therapists or anything external.' Female, 35
What is Autogenic Therapy?

A self-help technique learned over 8-10 weeks AT elicits the Relaxation Response, helping people to gain the inner resources and insight to change their reactions to stress.

What's the evidence?

Research suggests that AT, as a non-drug method, works side by side with other treatments. For people with conditions which are made worse by stress (asthma, irritable bowel syndrome, heart problems, migraine etc) AT can reduce or eliminate symptoms.

* Depression clears up more quickly and doesn't come back as often.
European Psychologist, 2004.

* Cancer patients increase their immune responses, sleep better and feel better about themselves.
European Journal of Oncology Nursing, 2004.

* Chronic pain patients reduce their physician visits by 36%.
The Clinical Journal of Pain, 1991

* Pain of migraine headaches is decreased and the likelihood of a full blown migraine is much lower. Headache, 2007

* Emotional distress and anxiety decrease; the ability to calm heightened stress responses increase.
Stress Medicine, 2002

'AT is a simple but effective way of tapping into our natural self-healing processes. I know from first-hand experience that learning AT is almost like being immunised against the stresses of daily life. I highly recommend it.'
Dr Roger Neighbour Past President, Royal College of GPs

What are the main benefits of AT?

Autogenic Therapy, as a stand alone treatment can:
* Help people switch from stress to relaxation at will
* Reduce or eliminate anxiety and panic attacks
* Increase confidence and self-esteem
* Significantly improve sleep quality
* Reduce the incidence of mild to moderate depression
* Offer a tool for self-empowerment and feeling more in control
* Increase concentration and focus

What else is AT useful for?

AT has also been clinically applied with a wide range of disorders such as panic attacks, insomnia, high blood pressure, phobias, colitis, arthritis, fatigue, muscular pain, anger issues and unresolved grief. It is helpful for pain management and the discomfort associated with any chronic condition.

Can AT improve performance?

Yes. Even people who are calm and well adjusted can benefit from AT. Many use AT to mobilise creativity, improve work, sports or artistic performance; also to facilitate personal growth and inner development.
'As a man I often forget to look after myself. AT helps me take time out. I'm able to detach from my problems, get a different perspective on life. It helps me stay confident and positive too.' Male, 45

How can I train as an Autogenic Therapist?

The British Autogenic Society's Diploma of Autogenic Training is suitable for those in the helping professions including complementary health practitioners of all disciplines, particularly those working in the fields of mental health, cancer, cardiac care and all chronic conditions. AT is very helpful in childbirth and parenting and therefore also relevant to midwifes and health visitors.

First learn AT for yourself over 8-10 weekly sessions and then train to teach others. (One year, part-time diploma). Training includes four modules: first module run over one week followed by three weekends. Start teaching, under supervision, after the first module.

After qualifying you will have added a new string to your professional bow by knowing how to help patients to help themselves. You could set up an independent practice and work directly with clients. You will also be eligible to become a member of the British Autogenic Society and enjoy the benefits of being in touch with like minded professionals across the UK.

Next courses begin September 2007 and March 2008.
