A
Loss to the CAM Market
Sad
news this week from the other side of the pond: Stephen E. Straus,
60, the first director of the National Centre for Complementary
and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) at the National Institutes of Health
(NIH), died of brain cancer on May 14th, 2007, at his home in Potomac,
Maryland.
Staying in the US, serious concerns have been raised among health practitioners
after the U.S. Senate passed the FDA drug safety
bill earlier this month with a 93-1 vote. A key amendment that would
have called for genuine drug safety protections for consumers - the
Grassley amendment 1039 - was defeated by a single vote (47 to 46).
On a more positive note, the Canadians (bless 'em), or rather their
sixth largest city of Edmonton, has announced it will stockpile Cold-fx
ginseng supplement for emergency workers as part of a broad pandemic
preparedness plan.
In England, meanwhile, Wendy Arnold has stepped down from her
post as President of the Federation of Holistic Therapists. A full member
since 1967 Wendy stepped into the role after the death of Wallace Sharps,
founder of the FHT. We wish Wendy all the best for the future.
Good news for the UK CAM market has been announced this month by Jayney
Goddard: the CMA is to set up a research division. I am
occasionally dismayed by the apathy displayed by some members of the
complementary medical profession who constantly say that we can't compete
with Big Pharma as they have all the money and power. It is time to
overcome this negative thinking and to stand up and get on with the
job of proving that what we do works', says Jayney.
Still in the UK, our own MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products
Regulatory Agency), fresh from its mixed success over the labelling
of herbal products, has picked a safer target in trying to make it easier
for people to report faulty medical equipment. 'Safer' is perhaps an
inappropriate word, considering some of the examples given include exploding
heat patches and burning mobility scooters!
Finally, be sure to look closely at all sections this month, as we have
updated nearly all of them. In fact, there are over 90 new items, including
new Events and Courses, the latest Products, Books, news about Herbs
etc etc. We hope you enjoy this month's altmedzine
and - more importantly - find it useful.

Art - New Medicine for the Body, Mind, and Spirit
By Andreas Moritz
If
healing is to be complete, lasting and purposeful, it must
occur simultaneously on all levels of body, mind, and spirit.
Foremost, it must take place at the very causal stages of
imbalance where the seeds of dissonance first begin to sprout
and later manifest themselves as discomfort, emotional distress
or disease.

scourge of the Royal Navy was not enemy cannon fire from
the French or Spanish fleets, but scurvy, a disease that
left sailors weak, bleeding and incapacitated, often killing
them.
