Homeopathy
Under Threat?
Following
last month's
unwelcome interest in complementary
medicine
from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence ('NICE')
we report this month from the USA where
the CAM market is under attack from the FDA, who effectively
want to classify all alternative remedies as unlicensed drugs. This
would mean CAM practitioners and retailers could be treated like illegal
drug dealers and has got the US CAM market in a bit of a state.
Mind you, if you think that's bad, spare a thought for our Homeopathy
sector, which is still reeling from the attacks made on it last year
by the UK medical profession. After several open letters were circulated
criticising alternative therapies in general, but homeopathy in particular,
it appears that a number of Primary Care Trusts have stopped funding
treatment at the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital, of which
the Queen is patron, and which now faces closure. The Queen, an advocate
of homeopathy, alongside Catherine Zeta Jones and Sir Paul McCartney,
always has 60 vials of alternative remedies in a leather carrier when
she travels abroad in case she falls ill.
Meanwhile, it wouldn't be an issue of AltMedZine without a member
of the UK medical establishment sticking his self-interested head above
the parapet and having a pop at complementary medicine. This issue it's
the turn of pharmacologist (surprise, surprise!) David Colquhoun,
who has described aromatherapy, acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine,
reflexology, osteopathy, therapeutic bodywork, naturopathy, Ayurveda,
shiatsu and qigong as anti-science. Well, he may be right,
but science isn't everything is it?
Finally, as from this month, the AltMedZine is going monthly.
This will mean we can take a more measured view of the CAM market, more
important now than ever, with us being attacked so regularly on so many
fronts. Another reason for going monthly is that my acupuncture practice
has got businer, so it's not all doom and gloom!

beauty problems and premature aging are closely linked with
declined liver performance which most often is elusive to
