Time
to get NICE?
A
clarion call this week from Professor
Linda Franck of University College
London Institute of Child Health, who has said: 'Around
half of general practitioners provide access to complementary medicine,
and two thirds of Scottish general practitioners prescribe herbal or
homoeopathic medicines.
However, NICE (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence)
has not been asked to develop guidance on these therapies. Given the
high public interest in complementary medicine, we find this surprising.
Certainly, the growth of CAM in the UK shows no signs of abating: this
week we have news of a new herbal and alternative medicine centre opening
in Worcester, the historic Manor Place baths in East London have been
saved by turning it into a Bhuddist Health Centre and Park Attwood
Clinic - also in Worcestershire - has announced a new series of
mistletoe based treatments for women with breast cancer.
This week a number of general health measures have been announced by
the government which the CAM market should be able to benefit from.
Public Health Minister Caroline Flint has launched the Healthy Living
Initiative, a programme to help families lead healthier lives; a
national action plan to tackle the issue of older people and nutrition
was announced by Health Minister, Ivan Lewis and the need for a global
health strategy in order to protect the health of the UK was outlined
in a report by the Chief Medical Officer on 7th March.
The food industry continues to dominate health news: if the apparent
'couldn't care less' attitude of global chemical giants BASF
and Monsanto about the implications of GM crops which have been
found to damage human organs such as liver and kidneys or which have
been contaminated by other substances isn't bad enough, we now learn
that the production of GM rice containing human genes has been authorised
in California.
