Bottom
of the Food Chain?
One
thing which gets clearer with each issue of the AltMedZine is
that the way food is grown, harvested, processed, stored, prepared and
eaten is inextricably a part of everyone's general health. A holistic
approach to the body and mind cannot ignore every part of the process
by which the food you eat arrives from the field to your plate.
It is therefore ever more essential that the general public is well
informed on decisions such as how much salt, sugar and fat goes
into commonly eaten foods; also what are the ramifiations of the GM
potato trials currently taking place? And controversy continues
to rage over food labelling in general.
If maintaining control over the food on our plates is hard enough, keeping
up with what's supposed to be good for you, and for what, is even more
bewildering. This issue we have one article extolling the use of Vitamin
A, another praising the benefits of selenium, and yet a third
article proposing that both are more likely to kill you than cure you.
Elsewhere we learn that watercress and an afternoon nap
do the double whammy on cancer and heart disease. Purely in the interests
of science I shall be having a big bowl of watercress soup and a siesta
every day from now on...
Even
more shocking - particularly in the light of the inevitable progress
of Avian Flu - is a recent government study which showed that
a huge percentage of people with colds do not bother to sneeze into
a handkerchief or cupped hands, and has actioned a campaign 'Coughs
and Sneezes Spread Diseases' as a result.
A significant aspect of CAM is prevention rather than cure, and
if we have lost the art of simple self-protection as we become reliant
on easily bought and seductively packaged instant cures, then we need
to help reverse that trend.
