Progress
from Ireland
Terrific
news this week from Northern Ireland, where NHS patients will be allowed
easier access to alternative and complementary therapies. The £200,000
year-long trial will run in two health practices in Londonderry and
Belfast. The main focus will be on anxiety and musculoskeletal problems.
GPs in these areas will now be able to refer patients for therapies
like acupuncture, homeopathy and massage. The pilot, announced last
October by Health Minister Paul Goggins, will be run by Get Well
UK, a not-for-profit organisation which promotes greater access
to complementary and alternative medicine.
Elsewhere
we have the usual ASA admonishmernts over misleading advertising,
this week it's the turn of The Purist Company to be ticked off,
for suggesting that most lawully marketed cosmetic products were toxic.
The Redbush Tea Company also got into trouble, for making a swathe
of unsubstantiated claims about its product, which is based on a tribal
South African preparation from the Rooibos plant.
Cancer seems to be well represented in this issue, with studies showing
that Ayurveda can help ease recovery from radiation and chemotherapy;
it also turns out that a bit of sun (well, Vitamin D anyway) could actually
help prevent cancer, as could not only olive oil, but extract of olive
leaves. More on all these stories below
