Healing
is All Round Us
This week's batch of stories bring home the very real health risks that
are all aound us - some of which are being held in check, others are
gaining in strength. Good news this week is that MRSA is on the retreat,
but an equally deadly infection, C. difficile is on the increase, according
to UK government figures. Worse news is that a Tamiflu resistant strain
of Bird flu has surfaced in Egypt, although the WHO is playing it down.
Mental
illness should always high on the agenda of any society and this week
we have stories of people who overspend to the point of making themselves
sick, and warnings to employers to take the mental health of their workers
more seriously. On the plus side, a lot of answers to these problems
lay in alternative medicine, which is just as well as pharmaceutical
solutions are struggling or failing. The healing powers of readily available
- and cheap - natural products are becoming ever more known and understood.
This week we hear about the probiotic enhancing qualities of the common
apple, while elderberries have been found useful in fighting flu, and
chocolate and unrefined salt actually can be good for you after all.
I wonder what they taste like together!
In any case, we hope you had a healthy January and are enjoying the
first hint of Spring in the air as the days start to noticeably draw
out. And we hope you enjoy this issue of altmedzine.

Pain
is Inevitable. Suffering is Optional

In
the integrated practice where I work, we continue to become
more interested and aware of the role of trauma and suffering
in patients with chronic health problems. Very typically,
these are the people who have 'seen everyone, done everything',
and are labelled variously as heart sink, thick-file or
washing machine (because they go round and round) patients.
