Herbalists
Under Attack!
It's the herbalists that are under attack this week - with the MHRA
deciding that there are public health risks arising from the commonly
known 'herbalist exemption' of the Medicines Act 1968. Section 12(1)
permits unlicensed remedies to be made up and supplied by a practitioner
to meet the needs of an individual patient following a one to one consultation.
The MHRA has issued a formal consultation exercise, so herbalists and
practitioners would be well advised to get involved!
The
MHRA has been quite busy actually, launching a series of warnings
about Traditional Chinese Medicine slimming aids, some of which have
been found to contain high levels of thyroxine and other unpleasant
adulterations.
This week we run a number of stories about the effects of various natural
remedies against cancer: tomato and broccoli eaten together have a positive
effect greater than when both are eaten separately, according to a study
from the University of Illinois; the National Cancer Institute
has discovered that the potential protective effects of calcium supplements
against colorectal cancer may carry on for five years after people stop
taking the supplements and the US based Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) has lent its credence to Vitamin C as a cancer inhibitor.
In Australia, meanwhile, The Cancer Council of New South Wales
is set to release a statement urging cancer survivors and patients to
use caution when consuming soy supplements or foods.
The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) have been quite busy lately
as well, taking on a Dutch health remedy company, a miracle slimming
chocolate from Hong Kong and a company called Magnopulse Ltd,
which manufactures and sells magnetic therapy products for humans and
animals. Finally, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has
rejected complaints about the Thermacare heat wrap for bad backs, but
upheld complaints about Avon's 'Face-Lift' product ANEW, which
it concludes is not much more than a moisturiser.

Pain
is Inevitable. Suffering is Optional
By Stefan Chmelik
In

more interested and aware of the role of trauma and suffering
in patients with chronic health problems. Very typically,
these are the people who have 'seen everyone, done everything',
and are labelled variously as heart sink, thick-file or washing
machine (because they go round and round) patients.

Herbalist
Exemption Under Review
Section
12 (1) of the Medicines Act is commonly referred to as the
herbalist exemption and permits unlicensed remedies
to be made up and supplied by a practitioner to meet the
needs of an individual patient following a one to one consultation.
The existence of this regime is greatly valued by herbal
practitioners and by many members of the public. However,
there are widely acknowledged weaknesses in the public health
protection afforded by the regime.
